Loch Leven Lakes Backpack Trip 2004 Pt 2.
We climbed from 6000 feet to 6800 feet in another 1.25 miles. Whew! I have never been so happy to see the crest of a mountain and to look over the other side. We dropped down about 100 feet to Lower Loch Leven Lake and pitched our tents. The boys went swimming! And were amazed to see 15 inch trout swimming around in the lake. We had been told that the lake was fished out and had not brought our fishing gear. Well, we fired up our backpack stoves and re-hydrated our dehydrated food. Built a fire and spent the evening watching it burn. It started out as a one-match A-frame tepee fire, but sort of devolved into an anything that workskind of fire. The rain the previous day had pretty well soaked any and all fuel in the area. Sunday, we got up and walked the 1.6 miles to Salmon Lake. Small, but pretty and ran into a Boy Scout Troop packing up to go home. They took the one-mile level trail shortcut to get out and go home. Huh. We walked back to camp, had lunch and prepared to explore the other two lakes in the area. On the way to Salmon Lake, one of the boys found a Rooster Tail fishing lure still in the package along the trail. One of the other boys remembered seeing a hunk of discarded fishing line along the shoreline of Lower Lake. Commander Brian whittled himself a fishing pole, tied the line to the pole and the lure and Hey Presto!Fishing Gear! He managed to distract the fish, but was never able to catch one. Kenny and AJ spent the afternoon trying to convince the fish to be dinner. The rest of us walked off to visit Middle Lake Leven, which is really rather big. And popular. There were several groups of people camped all around the lake! We went on up to see Upper Lake Leven, which sits at 6920 feet. Ya know, the air is mighty thin up there and it makes climbing a little tough on 55-year-old commanders& When we returned to camp, we found that Kenny and AJ hadnt succeeded in catching a fish. AJ had found himself a marmot or woodchuck when he had gone off in to the woods to tend to a call of nature. Evidently, he had wandered into the critters territory and it wanted him OUT! of there. Scared the call of nature right out of AJ, it did. Later that evening, as we were finishing our dinner, a mamma mule deer and her fawn visited us. She walked around and checked us out, but the fawn hung back and finally took off in fright. It was actually a pretty magical moment. All the boys were enthralled. By then, the sun had gone down, so we hit the sack. Monday morning we got up, packed up, policed the area, looked around in appreciation and started the walk out. Kenny and AJ made it down the mountain (2.6 miles and 1200 feet down) in 90 minutes. The rest of us took our time and got to the car in good shape. Commander Brian and I are really proud of our boys. Tyler is 8, Jose is 10 and Arlen is 10. They made it up and down the mountain and carried their own load. Kenny is 13 and AJ is 15. Fine young men! We loaded up and hit the road home. Another great Royal Ranger trip and another great set of memories.============================================================
