*I happened to be reading this at the moment when the subject came up,
and thought it contained some good thoughts for us to consider..
portions of the text will be "paraphrased" and some will be a direct
quote.. and there may even be a thought or two by ->A No.1<-

A primer on Plagiarism
-----------------------
by Louis J. Sirico Jr.

Intellectual Property exists in the form of thoughts and intent and
written published materials. The advent of the Internet has made easy a
cut and paste world of shape shifting text and sending it on an endless
journey to the far reaches of the cyberworld.

Plagiarism is failure to properly credit or seek permission from an
original author to
re-work shape paraphrase or publish their original work. It is an easy
thing to fall into,
and we must become diligent to avoid it's snare of our honor.

Types of Plagiarism

1.quoteing the words of another without attribution.
2.paraphraseing the words of another without attribution.
3.useing the ideas of another without attribution

QUOTATIONS- *when you quote.. give a citation to the source.

PARAPHRASING If you must, and change a few lines, you still must give a
citation, and indicate the original work through a "signal" such as:
See... or See Below..

ORIGINAL IDEAS- Closely following the structure of anothers written
work falls into the plagiarism category.
For example... reading an interesting article then writing it in your
own words does not mean you are free of
obligation to give credit for the original thought... though all the
words are yours<G>

*Bottom Line---
This article was advise to students of the LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES they
might encounter when written
or published works are to be given credit..

In the real world- and even on Rangernet<G> the rules are much looser
with regard to paraphrasing and using others original ideas. Still the
Bible says: "Render honor to whom Honor is due" (see below)

When items are handed us, mailed to our in-boxes ect. don't let the
temptation
to "get credit" for the latest hot button subject overcome prudent
journalistic
review of the source.. Ask your self if this was a copywrited work..
and err on the side of good judgment.

Don't let the responsibility of doing right weigh your voice for the
betterment of our Ministry/Program!
It is only good form and the duty of a gentleman to "with God's help-do
our best" and live by the Ranger code.

Thanks!
