*Have you as a Royal Ranger leader ever wished the Leader Handbook could

speak? Have you every found yourself wanting more than what passes for
good
enough... That there is just something more to do?

Here's how to have more time to invest in our real jobs as Coach and
Councilor!

Teach Leadership to the very people who need it most! The BOYS!

Every "Leader" carries a built in "Handbook" that comes to mind as
events
transpire called "The way it ought to be". Take time to share this with
your
Outpost and then *listen... and you will begin to hear that the boys
them selves
carry a "Leader handbook" in their hearts... maybe the word has been
confused
with "Bossman" or "Head Honcho" but we know a leader is one who has the
answer
when you need it..or can find a way handle the task with your help.
He's fair and
treats you with respect.

Royal Rangers can build leaders if it uses these eight points to open
the "Leader
Handbook" in each Ranger...

1.Goal setting- The advancement program is simply a way to teach task
management
and achieving a goal. *Our job as Commander is not to drag the boys to a
merit,
or give it away... but show them how to work methodically toward them,
while
providing an opportunity for achievement and recognition.

2.A Healthy Hierarchy-
Boys like a hierarchical system that is fair and clear to them. If you
make a boy a leader- stand by him
and never cut him off before his group. Council him quietly in your
expectations and go over it
enough until he understands, and can facilitate as a leader. Then let
him do it<G>

3. Mentoring-
Boys hunger for role models to shape their lives...
Be sure your life is worthy of their investment, and stand up for high
standards
in others as well. Good food feeds the body, garbage in is garbage out!

4. An Experience of Nature-
For boys, nature is a living organism, and they need to bond with that
natural life. Royal Ranger camping takes them out of the city and into
that natural
environment, to talk to God and listen for a casual reply...<G>

5. Spiritual Development-

Boys must find a way to develop a "spiritual meaning" to what goes on
around them.
God put us here for a reason, and requires us to get along, and share
the blessings
he has provided to us with each other. God's blessing is not just for
the time around the alter,
but for going into all the world.

Boys must find that virtue and character are a part of this "spiritual
life" and that is reflected
in their moral actions and reasoning.

6. Discipline-
The structure and organization of Rangers should reflect always the
mission and goal. This structure will back the development of the boys
in developing
their own system of self-dicipline. This is why we must invest in what
works..
as well as "the way it's supposed to be" Measured responsibility and
reflection are
our tools for doing this.

7. Social Interaction-

The process of talking before people and receiving their honest reaction
is
a way to hone character, as the way to polish a gem is by abrasive
action.

When we attempt to work together- we will hit bumps in the road. How we
choose
to handle these upsets and challenges is opportunity for a Teachable
moment and
reflection on our pledges to do our best with God's help. We may even
have to stop..
and share a moment of prayer to accomplish a simple task.

8. Love-

The meeting is a ritual that builds a sense of security, and peace among
Rangers...
When new boys and leaders come we are "strangers" and the process that
we
use begins to break down walls that protect us from each other...
Trust is required as well as friendship. Boys need several families!
!. the core family of Mom and Dad and the brothers and sisters..
2. the greater family of the extended family, teachers,Commanders and
people they meet
again and again..
3. Culture and community, church and the media.

The greatest thing a boy can learn is to Love God with all his heart,
mind and body..
and to Love others as he loves himself.

A boy finds his balance through all these influences that surround
him... let these
influences be true and just and you will build a positive force for good
in the future,
and the boys will open their own "Leadership manual" to guide them
through life.
