In
the late 19th century, western
figures such as Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp and George Armstrong
Custer were known far and wide for their exploits on the frontier.
They made their reputations by deeds both real and imagined. It
was a time when reality was transformed into legend and ordinary
people were elevated to mythic proportions. And it was Buffalo
Bill's time. In an era when so many Westerners became household
words, William
Frederick Cody was far more
than a popular western figure -- he was the most famous American
on earth. Like many of his contemporaries, his exploits were often
embellished. But the facts of his life transcend the legends.
Pony Express rider, cavalry scout, Medal of Honor winner, buffalo
hunter, showman, matinee idol, and entrepreneur, Buffalo Bill
was -- and is today -- a national icon. Many familiar events in
western American history can be viewed within the context of his
life, and he used his fame and fortune to help build the West
of the 20th century. He didn't want to be remembered as "another
old showman," but as "the man who opened up Wyoming
to the best of civilization." Today, a dazzling museum in
Cody, Wyoming, stands as a monument to his life and times. But
far more than a tribute to the man, this remarkable institution
embodies the comprehensive essence of the West on a scale unmatched
anywhere in the world.
