*If Leadership is found in raiseing the MORALE of the outpost- and gives rise to "Group action" then we as Adult leaders are responsible to become guides and *shine the light down the trail... get out of the way as the boys climb the High Path to the lifetime adventure! HOW DO WE GET OUT OF THE WAY? Often we want to be there with the boys, doing and showing the way! We hover over boys who fear to tie the square knot and "show" them.. often by taking the rope away from their hands! "*See! that's how I want you to do it!" *be the boy! How would you want to be treated? In the heart of honest men is the ability to command action and decide what action to take.. *We do this naturally and are in fact paid money to do this on the job.. to exercise decision making and intuitive actions. You would not want to be instructed by an overprotective trainer.. you'd want to get your hands on it and figure it out! But if the requirements are that we stand aside as questions go un-answered.. as those with less skills teach the wrong technique... How do we avoid feeling that we have let the boys down? *after all.. a Leader is there to tell you the right answer! Right? (*wrong<G>) *If Leadership is truely "raiseing" the Morale, and encourageing the boys to succeed we will let the boys discover the answer! We'll be patient and wait for the natural time to weigh-in with our insight! LTC training says that "Lecture" is the least effective way to receive training, that people remember but 10% of what they hear! Standing before boys and reading- yelling is a turn-off to learning. Section 5 also says that we retain only 50% of what we see- and hear! This is better but often the boys can't read at all! The best way is to construct situations where the boys can use the tools and materials to build the Outpost themselves! *Don't become discourage if they don't get it fast- or you even get accused of *not being the "ideal" Commander! *That's not important! That's not the main thing- *What is important is to have the boys become READY for anything! Show the boys you care by letting them become the LEADERS! ..for in doing so you raise the standard, and prepare them for the ethical choices needed to develop their full potential! Hands-on! -=A=- -- ࡱ
