In 1955 General Motors introduced the 265 overhead valve V-8
in it's line of Chevrolet cars.. (*Holden in OzLand) Shortly it was
increased in Cu. in. displacement to the 283ci V-8 that powered
many 60's Hot Rods... In 1962 a high performance engine was
introduced in the "SS Supersport" line, and the birth of production
musle cars was born.

The relation of Surfing-Hot Rods- and Royal Rangers is all tied
togather with the year 1962... Back then a '63 Chevy with a
409 was a hot number! We had a Lt.Cdr. in the outpost who
had one in black with black interior and had put "411 gears"
in the rear end. He had a double pumper Holly 4 barrel and
the 4 speed and it could move! Gas was .35 a gal or less..

He paid for all of this with the ULTIMITE JOB- He worked
part time at Disneyland counting money<G> ...and needless to
say was quite popular with the youth group..

One night after rangers he kindly provided transportation home
for me, and I was impressed by the thumping sound of his "smitty"
pipes and the mellow lights of his dash as he ran through the gears..

He "goosed it" going into third and churped the tires and I smiled<G>
He surfed a big 9'6" Gordieboard, and was a purty good guy.

Later in life he traded it for a '68 Corvette and I never saw him
again..

409's fell to the 427 and them to the 458 Rat engine...and all became
toys
with the '73 oil embargo<G>

409 is a "House cleaner?"
I don't think so...amigo!
