I thought it was self-explanatory. I guess I was mistaken.

While running this mailing list, I deal with a lot of things most of you never see.
One problem is bounced email. Another problem is really clueless people who could add
themselves to the mailing list, remove themselves, or change their address, but they
fail for a variety of reasons, including lack of comprehension and sometimes laziness.
(Given the tail message that is on all RangerNet email, I sometimes really have to
work at being kind and understanding with some of these.) Sometimes someone will
subscribe themselves at one address, then try to post from another. (This doesn't
work, because of our spam filter.) Sometimes they do that without knowing what they
are doing. Sometimes fancy email manipulations such as email aliases and secondary
mailing lists cause bounce messages to come from email addresses that aren't
subscribed directly, and the headers in the bounce messages provide no clue as to
their origin. Sometimes such bounce messages result in error message volume i!
n my in box sufficient to waste enough of my time, or someone gets so confused about
what address they are subscribed at that I have RangerNet Robot send out a message to
every email address on the list with the recipients address in the "To" header and in
the body of the message, so that when the confused person gets the email or I get the
bounce message, I know which address it was sent to. I can then remove the address,
change the address, or whatever.

Usually, when I do this, there are only one or two people who really need the message.
In this last case, I was getting really annoying bounce messages and error messages
from an address that wasn't directly on the list. As soon as RangerNet Robot had done
its duty, I knew exactly what the problem address was and removed it from the list.

On this mailing list, bounce messages usually result in automatic removal from the
mailing list without notice. Usually, this is the right thing to do, because an email
account is closed or their mailbox is overstuffed and they wouldn't get any more mail
anyway. Sometimes, it is not. In any case, if your RangerNet email stops coming
suddenly, first check that you haven't exceeded your storage allocation (i. e., on
Juno, check your email; on Hotmail delete some messages, etc.) or done anything fancy
that could cause a bounce message, then resubscribe yourself at
http://rangernet.org/subscribe.htm (or use the majordomo email interface if you have
no web access).

Does that help?
