Try checking your local library for books & videos about building pinewood derby winners. Also, experience is the best teacher. Ask some experienced racers for their advice. But be warned that you'll get about as many different opinions as to what makes a car faster as their are builders. Last year, our outpost brought home 9 of 14 possible 1st place medals from the sectional race. My own cars have won 5 of the past 6 titles in the leaders division. Here's a little of what works for me... 1. Use as much added weight, and as little original wood as possible. 2. Keep the weight low and centered, maybe placing it slightly toward the rear of the car. 3. Polish your axles and sand the wheels smooth where they meet the track. Always check your local rules to make sure your car will qualify.
