Oh great -=A=-!
I would never claim that the backroads of the Ozarks compare to the backroads
of any of the western mountains. All I'm saying is that compared to that
beautiful section of Texas known as "hill country", the backroads of the
Ozarks are pretty hairy. Remember that it's all relative, although what
someone's kinfolks has got to do with this discussion is beyond me. Also, if
you want a neat little taste of just how much fun some of the backroads of the
Missouri Ozarks can be try Hwy 90 between Noel & Washburn just a little west
of Roaring River SP in SW Missouri. There's rarely an opportunity to go over
15-20 MPH and that's only if you're in a car that corners real well. In a bus
or van you would be limited to around 5-10 MPH for a great deal of the
distance.
I've just perused a magazine article about a road that winds around thru the
Himalayas and other adjoining ranges that is described as an 800 mile track of
dirt, broken asphalt, and unstable macadam. It begins in China, continues
south into Pakistan thru a 15,514' high pass and later winds up in the lowland
cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. From what the article had to say I expect
this little road might just qualify as a bonafide "whoop-de-doodle" road. If
you want more detail check out the Travel section in the March 99 edition of
"The Atlantic Monthly".
BTW, just exactly what is a -=A=-? For some reason everytime I see that
symbol I'm reminded of the symbol for "the artist formerly known as Prince",
or at least something like that. <BG>
Later.
