I am always interested in learning more about primitive cooking methods. Many years ago I read a good article in Harrowsmith Magazine about cooking with clay. they said if you wrapped meat (they used Chicken) in clay without toxic oils in it and buried it in a pit under a campfire and let it bake all day you would have a delicious meal. They also told about an experiment they did by Wrapping the chicken in cheese cloth and then clay and baked it in the home oven for several hours. I tried this and it was great tasting chicken, so well done it fell off the bone. I also tried it on the grill and it worked out but not as well. I still have yet to try the campfire method but I'm sure it will work.
This article also discussed clay pots or Romertopf pots for baking in the oven. I know this sounds rather elegant but it is a primitive cooking technique. I also need an even heat or the dish will break. If approved this would be a neat way to cook at FCF events and at public rendezvous which I also participate in. Does anybody have any suggestions for using my Romertopf on campouts without ruining the dish?
