1965!
*For months the Outpost had prepared for a backpack trip up
the John Muir trail in Yosemite Nat'l park in California..
All the wwekly meeting were held to READY ourselves for this
*Adventure!
We left the church with *primitive gear bought or made from
WW2 webbing and pine packboards with sponges for padding!<G>
The trip started as a 350 mi drive north from Los Angeles all night long!
...and in the early hours we began to sway up the mt. roads into
Yosemite Valley!
The trail from the Valley floor is uphill past several fantastic
waterfalls... *Vernal and *Nevada where the trail passed inches
away from the drop-off! 1,000 cfm fell '100+ft down to ROCK!
The Merced river flows from the high sierra peaks with slow melting
snow thru a glacial created valley... and here is where we camped!
*Tired and blistered.. we sliped off the packs by the River....
and rested! *CAMP! ...some grabed a Trout rod and began to fish!
...some made zzzzzzzzzz'z!<G>
Commander hustled a work detail to gather dry wood for a Campfire..
we sorted out the cans of food and cooking gear that the Outpost had
carried... lashed togather a work table off a nearby log.. set up a
tarp of plastic and watched the sunset on a perfect day!
*But suddenly... a cold wind blew up the river.. the sun was blocked
by a dark cloud and the wind began to rise! *Night fell as a Mountian
Storm pounded the little yosemite valley!
The wind in the timber began to howl and the sound of cracking trees
falling to earth signaled DANGER!
Commander called for the fire to be built up... and we gathered,
and he led in *prayer...
"*Father God.. you are master of the wind and rageing storm..
protect us this night, and keep us Lord in the hollow of your hand..."
and to the Outpost he said:
*Guys... this storm packs a power.. and we are the visitor's
here in the high country... We are as ready as can be for anything
tonight, *but are you ready to face the storm of your life? *If
the lord was to call you home...would you be READY? *if not!
NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME AND PLACE TO MAKE SURE!
*we made sure... and in the light of that fire, the comforting
presence of the HolySpirit came and blessed us!
The darkness was lifted and we slept in peace!
and as the storm passed.. the dawn came early<G>
.. on the best campout in my life!
