The Boy Scouts of America (see link #5 below) has settled a
long-standing dispute with the Unitarian-Universalist Church.
Under the agreement, the Unitarians will delete language in a
handbook that accompanies the Religion in Life award. It referred
to what the church calls "homophobic and discriminatory
attitudes" of Scout leaders, and questioned the organizations
concept of God and what constitutes belief in God, news reports
said. The church said it will detail its concerns to Scouts in
separate pamphlets given out with the handbook.
...The Boy Scouts last year ordered the denomination to stop
conferring Religion in Life awards to Scouts who are among its
members. The Boy Scouts teaches that an avowed homosexual is not
a good role model for "traditional family values," Gregg Shields,
a Boy Scouts spokesman, said. The denomination said it plans to
seek a seat on the Boy Scouts religious relationships committee.
