First thing I'd do is look around at other web sites & see what you like &
what you want to put on yours. There are a number of good sites around. At the
risk of self glorification, you can look at my outpost's site. It also has
links to our FCF chapter site & other good sites such as Ranger DJ's
(excellent site, that). Our web address is: http://ixi.net/~4waystop/. Let me
know what you think.
Next, decide what software you want to use. I use mostly Netscape Communicator
to compose the pages. You'll also need a decent graphics program to adjust &
convert any pics or clipart for your site. Try to find one that does
transparent GIFs. I have found that to be invaluable for making the graphics
blend into the page well. Finally, you may need a program to upload your web
pages to your ISP's server. Netscape has the ability to do that but I've never
been able to get it to work smoothly. Instead, I use an FTP program (WS-FTP is
the name; it's a free download). Ask you ISP for help on the ins & outs of
getting your pages uploaded. Methods vary w/ each provider.
Finally, play about w/ the software, pushing buttons, writing stuff, making
pages, etc. until you come up w/ something you'd be proud to show the world.
If you're like me, that could take a bit of time. <g> Don't expect it to be
some kind of technological marvel w/ animated GIFs & embedded music & such
right away. Stuff like that requires at least a passing knowledge of how to
write HTML code, unless, of course, you go out & buy one of those fancy (&
expensive) web page design programs. (I use Netscape because it's inexpensive
& does pretty much what I need. For the fancier stuff, I figured out the HTML
by looking at how other sites did things, copying the code & substituting my
own info where needed.)
