We had fun on our Pioneer camping trip along the South Platte River. This section of river was an easy, meandering stretch that was easy to canoe on, and we had a great deal of fun doing so. The weather was hot, but nothing a water fight couldn't cure. :-) By the way, do you know that a bull snake can look very much like a diamond-back rattlesnake? Thank God for His protection! My son almost stepped on one, but stopped just in time. Bull snakes aren't poisonous, but their teeth are sharp, anyway. The hostile reptile struck at the broom I was wielding (shooing it away from the latrine area), but did no harm. Fortunately for the snake, I was closer to the broom than the shovel when I heard my son yell "SNAKE!!!" -- because I first thought it was a rattler when I saw it, and might have ended the animal's life before I checked its tail. Dads tend to not be very gracious to venomous vipers (or anything looking like one -- bull snakes aren't poisonous) in the vicinity of their boys (or any boys, for that matter). I'd much rather chase a bull snake away than encounter drunken, violent, and armed campers next door. I told commander Ken about the other outpost 207's encounter, and he told about one time the Holy Spirit prompted him to change campout plans. After that weekend, he read in the paper about how a violent gang had attacked campers at the place the outpost didn't go. I believe God will help us with safety as we tune into Him and obey His promptings. May God grant us wisdom in this area, so that all our Royal Ranger outings may be safe. Along with all of our fun, and thankfulness for God's protection, we had a good council fire time, with Commander Ken teaching on being READY (including READY for the coming of the Lord). We also had a morning Bible lesson on Ephesians 4, right before our river canoeing lessons.
