One must also consider that this new nation had just fought a war and its
resources had already been taxed greatly. Additionally, most of these
patriots were not necessarily young men and many had died before Washington's
second term as President had expired.
So, just consider the effects of a long war after a very long and hard
taxation by the British, and one can see that the new country would not
necessarily have the resources to make recompense. Sorry, just my Irish
heritage showing:)))
