If anyone could have complained about his circumstances, it was Joseph. Thrown into a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, unjustly accused by Potiphar's wife, jailed for several years, and seemingly forgotten, he had good reason to murmur, "Why did this happen to me?" But Joseph had learned to look beyond his immediate circumstances and to declare, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good." What faith!
We often label adverse circumstances or a disquieting experience as a "calamity." But if we could see as God sees, we wouldn't want to miss the invaluable spiritual lessons we might not gain in any other way.
Let us trust God. In His time, we'll clearly see His purposes - if not on earth, then in heaven.
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
