Outpost 55 of Washington, NJ will be backpacking in Thunder Swamp a network of trails covering about 30 miles in the Delaware State Forest located in NE Pennsylvania. We will be hiking the main loop, about 20 miles, July 29-31. Most of the loop follows a stream, as such; there's plenty of water. At the end of the first days hike about 8 miles, there's a lake where we will be swimming. Our group will consist of 3 leaders and 11 boys, mostly Pioneers. We have hiked on the Appalachian in NJ in the past however: we had some trouble last year with a bear in High Point State Park. We will also be able to have a campfire in this location despite the dry conditions most everywhere in the east Thunder Swamp is still wet enough to allow campfires. If you live anywhere in Northeast PA or NJ this is an accessible location (about 2hours west of NYC) and a relatively easy hike. A permit is required, however; it is free.
