Today I attended the funeral of a long time colleague, Stan Spicer. Stan was
a devote Christian and taught English at the college for 29 years. At the
funeral I discovered that he had attended the Multnompah School of the Bible
and had actually studied to be a pastor, but decided as an instructor he'd
influence more lives of 18 - 25 year olds to accept Christ. He had assigned
as readings certain portions from the old and new testaments and would
challenge students to write essays on what they believed and why.

As they ran down the events and highlights of Stan's life, it was revealed
that he was a humble man, witty and loving. His nine biological children and
his wife confessed he was a wonderful father and husband -- always thinking
of himself. In fact at his 50th wedding anniversary he had to be talked into
buying a suit (which he never owned) for the occasion, and apparently did so
only because it would please his family. It was this suit he was buried in
today. As people stood and recapped memories of Stan, it was clear that he
loved the Lord and served him with all his might. Now he would hear Jesus
say, "Well done thou good and faithful servant". One of the Math Instructors
stood up and said that in a heated argument with Stan one day about the
existence of God, Stan said " we live our lives by faith, the believer and
the atheist, you must decide, without scientific proof what is the truth.
The instructor burst out sobbing and gave his life to Christ. The Pastor
said, 2 weeks ago Stan was sick and had called the Pastor to officiate at
his impending funeral. The Pastor laughed and said, Stan, you only have a
cold. Stan had replied, "No, Jesus has told me that HE is taking me home".

In his earthly life Stan sowed seeds in the field of Eternity, laying up
treasures in heaven which will bless him forever and ever and ironically the
service ended with the organist playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", where
Stan has found his pot of gold.
