Chuck and Sue,
The best Straight Arrow Leader's costume I've seen was
Chuck "Sugar Bear" Palmerino, SNE Dist OP 15. He had a
full Bearskin coatas part of his FCF costume and wore that
outfit to ALL the meetings. Since Sue can't join FCF
(yet), she probably won't have that advantage. When I
started Rangers as a teen, our Buckaroo leader was a woman,
and she wore a western outfit; Straight Arrows was taught
by the Pastor, and he wore a khaki uniform. The B/SA
leaders in my outpost are working on costumes (or so they
tell me), but haven't tried wearing them at the meetings
yet.
In my experience, the best leaders have the best
outfits. I think this cuts both ways: If you care enough
about your class to go all the way, you'll take the time to
create a good outfit. If you take the time to create a
good outfit, you'll take more pride in your class and try
to do a better job.
On a more practical level, I'd suggest getting a khaki
uniform first. It gives the impression that you are a real
"Commander" and more pull with the boys. I don't know what
your bank account looks like, but as soon as you can, move
to an Indian/Western theme suggested by the handbook.
