I have read most of the items concerning "PUSHUPS", what I am reading is that there is NO moderation and variety of discipline and control applied in the meeting time. Pushups create no more harm than a verbal correction IF there is the attention to abilities, disruption reasons, activity levels, feature levels, etc., etc., etc.
If you only apply one system in your ministry you will have all the aforementioned situations in other e-mails.
But, if you would apply in LOVE a variety of activities, features, crafts, and yes--disciplines, no one thing will be "clung" to except the ministry of love through the time you spend with them.
Consider this-- the LORD repeatedly disciplined His disciples even to the essence of a hurtful rebuke of relating to them that they were weak, faithless, lazy and would not have Him to rely on.
That is our job, the ministry of Christs that we have given ourselves to--to provide activity, craft, teaching, and Bible to help these to find strength, faith in CHRIST, how to put their hands-mind-body...to work for the LORD until He comes.
Now to relate to how I operate, yes, I do administer pushups in all ages of Royal Rangers, but I also use time-outs, meeting-outs(boys having to miss meeting and sit in on adult class and give report--Pioneers and up), no recreation, and others. I also allow the outpost peers to be the point of heavy(letting all boys in group know what needs to be done by them all), this works especially as the boys are here mostly to be a part of a group(gang), let the group prod their mate on, don't make yourself the constant heavy.
We are seen a an over-lording judgmental ADULT(bad word). Put the patrol system to work and let the patrols and outpost(age group) decide on forms of discipline and reasons for discipline. They make the rules and reg's, they live by them. But here takes work and commitment by the leader. You need to recognize and see that their application has a need, is applicable, and is discipline training-not punishment.
Why do we claim that we are to teach the boys only Love and Compassion(this was not Jesus nor Father God). Consider the word "disciple", it means to learn, live, and practice under a discipline(making oneself to do what it normally would not be willing to do). The human nature is normally an enemy of God and His plan for us, so discipline must be taught, learned and applied. We had to learn discipline by those that cared for us as God Himself cared for us(He disciplines those that He loves and call themselves His children)--if not then they are the children of Satan and thereby despise correction because they do not love God nor can they. I would rather have a Ranger come back to me and make a statement that they remembered forms of discipline and yet still see them in Gods house worshipping than to find them "in the world"--because those that learn God loves them so much that is why His Only Son Died To Pay The Price, but God loves them even more than to leave them to their own devises that will rob them of special blessings and rewards--so He will bring about the circumstances, situations, disciplines, etc. to help all of us to grow out of our "sin-nature" and into His God-nature.
That is our reward from and for God.
Love without works and changes into God-obeying children is not a love for us to show as His children.

God Bless All.
