Hey All,
another lurker comes out of the shadows

My name is Kerry Weiser. My husband, Bud and I have been
Ranger/Missionettes parents for three years.

I have read through much of the Rangernet archive and am impressed with the
enthusiasm, wisdom, and desire to serve God I have seen displayed.

I thought perhaps you might be interested in the flip side of the question:
Why do we parents bring our sons to Royal Rangers?

Let me tell you about our boy. Andrew is 12 years old. He started in
Rangers because his friend said it was fun. But we saw other possibilities.
We wanted a program that would teach self-confidence through honest
achievement, responsibility through teamwork and being held accountable.
But Andrew wasn't particularly interested in that. He wanted fun.

We wanted our son to have men in his life who would walk a path we would be
proud to have our son follow. Not perfect men, just men with a heart for
boys and for the Gospel. And who knew how to have fun!

Because we know our boy. He's not particularly motivated to be GMA. He
didn't do the Gold Track. He avoids any merit that requires reading or
writing. He's allergic to anything he thinks is work.

But our son proudly wears the prestigious silver hawk award and six merits.
He has been an asst. patrol leader, a patrol leader, and pioneer senior
guide. He surprised alot of people (including himself) by becoming
sectional Pioneer of the Year. You see, he didn't study for the contest, he
just went along for the ride because it sounded like fun. And because he
likes the way Cdr. Duane and Cdr. Jen treat him when he's "done good."

This summer, there were no RR Cdrs available from our outpost to take my son
to Ranger Camp (PowWow). But Andrew didn't want to miss out on the fun. So
we called another outpost and they made a place for him. Andrew had an
awesome encounter with the Holy Spirit at Ranger Camp and he will never be
the same. But mostly he still sees it as fun.

Why do we bring him? Because he thinks it's fun, but we know it's more.

Thanks for being more.

P.S. Bud wants to know how come whenever we open mail from A#1 we hear
bluegrass music, but it sounds like the Beach Boys? :-)
