Well, Floyd is a puff of air . 17 are confirmed dead. Many people are
left without electricity and the flooding is still everywhere. In Virginia, a
State Police officer got swept downstream in rising flood waters while
carrying out his duties, he swam to safety, In the town of Supply North
Carolina, the hospital got it's roof ripped off again. Hurricane Bonnie had
ripped it off once before. In Philadelphia, PA, an Amtrak train got swamped
on the tracks and could not proceed. A fire Dept. came out to ferry the
passengers off the train in a Jon boat. Then the boat was swamped and the
people were left hanging onto limbs of trees for 4 hours on the waters of the
Schuykil River. These people were treated for hypothermia.
Here in the Washington, DC area, we had to treat Floyd like a guest
because he brought us some badly needed rain to help us with our drought.
Damages here were minimal, but to the southeast of here down in the Norfolk,
VA Beach, Hampton Roads areas, they are still having major difficulties. The
town of Portsmouth Virginia had it's water system get knocked out, so there
is no clean water there.
The devastation is widespread. Many people can sit back and laugh at
Hurricane Dennis for what it did, but Floyd was something to contend with.
For folks in Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was shut down due to high
winds.
So for those of us affected by Floyd all the way from Jacksonville to
Caribou, we say good bye to Floyd (and good riddance)!
