My trailblazer son and I were looking through the merits for some ideas of
what to do with his patrol. We found merits for hiking, camping, and winter
camping, but we noticed that our most common type of camping was not
represented, i.e. rain camping.
We would like to submit for your consideration the Pacific Northwest Rain
Camping Merit:
1. Explain the four types of rain: fall, winter, spring, summer
2. Camp out a total of three nights without you, your shelter, or your
supplies floating away.
3. Discuss the merits of the following types of footwear: galoshes,
sandals, and flippers. State your preference and explain why.
4. Define mossytoe. Explain how to treat first-, second-, and third-degree
mossytoe and how to prevent mossytoe.
5. Demonstrate your ability to light a fire under water.
6. Prepare and serve a three-course meal, using the following cooking
methods: poaching, steaming & boiling
7. Demonstrate your ability to read tracks in a mud puddle.
8. Explain the advantages of webfeet.
9. Explain the advantages of staying on the trail while treading water.
10. Demonstrate your ability to talk your commander out of his dry sleeping
bag and your patrol leader out of his last pair of dry socks.
I realize that this merit may seem difficult for those outposts in dryer
climates, but I think most conditions could be simulated by the use of
firehoses and sprinklers.
