Here are some facts for you to consider:
Nobody, including Microsoft and Bill Gates, ever has or will pay anybody to
forward email. Nobody is giving away trips to Disneyland to people who
forward chain letters. Nobody is giving away cars to people who forward
chain letters.
Even if they were, these chain letters (and their various ugly mutations)
have been circulating so widely for so long that any prizes would have long
since been rewarded, and the offers well expired. (If they weren't, even
Bill Gates would be broke by now.)
Although it is possible in most cases to trace where an electronic mail
letter came from when you receive it (at least to the ISP it was first
forwarded through), this is not guaranteed to be accurate in all cases. It
is not generally possible to trace where other people forwarded your mail
to. For example, if I forwarded your hoax chain letter to [EMAIL PROTECTED],
neither you nor Microsoft would have a clue (unless the Federal Trade
Commission actually investigated your actions in response to that forwarding).
If Microsoft were actually able to trace email to the degree alleged, the
privacy violation implications would be immense, and the negative publicity
surrounding that ability would cause Microsoft severe economic loss.
If an email seems to good to be true, it is.
Chain letter hoaxes cost you more than you think. They affect your
reputation. They cause people to waste time downloading and reading them.
They clog the Internet with traffic that reduces performance for the good uses.
It is a funny thing, but people who who wouldn't repeat verbal rumors often
propagate unconfirmed hoaxes by email.
Take a good look at the letter, below. Note that there is mention of a time
limit, but no DATE at which the bogus offer expires. I've seen this message
floating around the Internet for over a year now.
If you happen to get any payment for forwarding this email, please send me
a notarized statement of the amount and circumstances of the payment, and I
will gladly print a retraction.
