Emergency Management Office suggests that the following can be done as a
family activity each month in order to prepare for "the worst" -

MONTH 1
inventory disaster supplies already on hand especially camping gear.
if you fill your own water containers mark them with the date you filled
them. (replace after 6 months)

MONTH 2
Change battery and test smoke detectors (purchase one if you haven't
already)
If you own a camera or video camcorder, videotape or take pictures of every
room in the house
Store the film and or videotape with family or friends who live out of town.

MONTH 3
Conduct a home fire drill
Local gas meter and water shutoff points and attach shutoff tool near by
Establish an out of state contact to call in case of an emergency (local
phone line usually are tied up)

MONTH 4
Place a sturdy pair of shoes and a flashlight under your bed so they are
handy in an emergency
Start putting supplies in storage containers and include blankets or
sleeping bags for everyone

MONTH 5
Make photocopies of important papers and put in the storage container
Find out who in your neighborhood has skills in CPR, first aid, amateur
radio, small engine repair, wilderness survival skills etc. - let them know
your skills.

MONTH 6
Put extra eye glasses in the supply container
store some coins with the emergency supplies and know where the nearest pay
phone is in the neighborhood
show family members where the shutoff is for utilities - gas, water, power

MONTH 7
Meet with neighbors and find out who has a chain saw, chippers, snow
blowers, 4 wheel drive vehicles
Make a small "READY" kit for your car (include food, water, blanket, small
1st aid kit, phone numbers, coins for pay phones)

MONTH 8
Make arrangements to have someone help  your children of you're at work when
emergency strikes
Conduct an earthquake drill, bomb drill at home
Replace prescription medications, get "spare" contact lens, hearing aid -
put in storage box

MONTH 9
Make arrangements for someone to take care of your pets if you're at work
when an emergency strikes
Exchange work, home, cell phone and emergency contact numbers with neighbors
for emergencies

MONTH 10
Secure water heater tank to wall studs
Check cabinets that have heavy objects and place in lower cabinets
Check dates on stored for and expiration dates and replace as needed

MONTH 11
Replace any water that is over 6months old with fresh. Bottled water has
expiration dates marked
Ask family members for favorite board games they would like to put in
storage containers

MONTH 12
Place any magazines you would enjoy reading, or crossword puzzles or musical
instrument in storage bin
