Please forgive my tone with respect to hoax chain letters. I need to remind
myself that more than 99.5% of you are innocent. I've gotten 2 real virus
emails (containing an obvious and suspicious executable attachment that I
didn't run which I investigated and found it really was a virus), one
javascript virus joke (not very funny, but not an effective virus, either),
and 5 hoax chain letters (which are another form of virus in themselves --
if you don't understand, think about it some more) in the last 3 days.
Naturally, the "warning" letters warned against things that will never
happen, while the real virii came without any advance warning from a chain
letter. Chain letters circulate and recirculate uncontrolled for years, but
they are slow to get started and almost impossible to stop. They make
people think that they will help someone or gain some advantage themselves
if they propagate the things, usually under false pretenses. Therefore,
chain letters are a particularly BAD way to warn people about computer
viruses, lost children, government issues, etc. No competent person or
organization starts a chain letter for these purposes. The next time you
get a chain letter, just delete it. If you get an email with an attached
executable file or other file that can contain executable macros, don't run
them unless you know what they are in advance.

A Royal Ranger is ALERT to dangers inherent in email and Internet use, and
discerning in what is true and false. We don't lie, cheat, or steal, but we
aren't unaware that the enemy does all of these things.
