I had to take my wife Lisa to Shawnee Mission Medical Center last night,
where she remains in intensive care today. She is in critical condition from
an infection probably obtained via surgery Dec. 16th. A specialist (a
criticalist) is coordinating her care.

Sunday, 10 days post op, she developed a fever of 100.1, which climbed to
102.2 off and on throughout the day. She had diarrhea, and vomiting in about
8 episodes over a 20 hour period. We thought she had gotten the flu.

I took her to the DR's office at 10:30 AM, Monday, and he gave her 2 liters
of fluids. She felt somewhat better, and we went home awaiting the results
of a urinalysis. At 6:00, the Dr. called me at home to tell me that she had
an infection. Lisa was in chills again, and he recommenced we go to the
hospital. I had the Dr. approve a direct admit, so we wouldn't have to
hassle with the lines at the ER.

When we got there, Lisa was so weak, she could hardly walk. I got a
wheelchair, and they took her up to a room. After half an hour, an aid took
her blood pressure, and stated that it seemed low, and asked if she had low
blood pressure. She took it again, and it was 58/20, with a pulse rate of
122. I looked at her as she was scratching her head, and said, "She seems
shocky to me." Her color was drained, and she was clammy. The aid then went
and got two nurses, who called more nurses, then the Dr., who directed that
she be taken to the Intensive care unit.

She had a rough night, her BP stayed in the mid to high 70's / 25 or so. Her
pulse rate was at least 122 all night. They have given her 6 liters of
fluids, antibiotics, and Dopamine to try to get her pressure higher. 5:30
this AM it was 114/70, but she began to complain of muscle cramps, pain and
joint pain in the arm of the IV, and not long after the same in her other
arm. They stopped the Dopamine, and the pain eased, but within 1/2 hour, her
BP dropped to 48/19, rate 130. We almost lost her.

The highest BP since then, has been 84/37, rate 127. They have started her
on a wide spectrum antibiotic to try and stop the infection, but they will
not know until this afternoon, what the infection is, to treat it more
directly.

We would appreciate your prayers. Lisa has a long hard fight ahead of her.
Pray for her strength and healing.

Thanks,

dave
