Thanks for the info, I will be watching that just for the entertainment. I like stuff about the 18th and 19th Century whether it is factual or made up. Roy Rogers tapes are fun to watch but i don't know how historically acurate they are.
Be careful about what you see on TV, they still like to change the storyline and the costuming to make the program more appealing to the general viewer. In recent times the movie makers have payed more attention to historical accuracy so you may find more good stuff you can trust.
I would rather take a group of boys to a living history museum where they can see more of the real costuming and get a good interpretation from the ones that are interpreting the time period.
I worked at Old World Wisconsin as a Costumed Interpreter for two seasons. We were required to read a several page document about our exhibit and were subject to a write up if we strayed too far from the information we were given to share with the public. The written interpretations were researched by well qualified historians on staff at the museum. They were very strict on what we wore when doing our interpretations. Women were told how they could wear their hair. Our footwear had to be approved by management and we could have been written up for wearing a watch on our wrist if it was exposed. The y expected us to do more background research on our subjects that we covered thus making us more knowledgable and better able to answer difficult questions that didn't pertain directly to our topic.
At the German farm we would do a lot of reading on German Immigration and the 1850s and on general farming practices in Germany in the 19th century. At the shoe shop we studied shoemaking in the 19th Century and about Bohemian Immigration etc.
We also studied for every exhibit 19th Century Wisconsin, politics and everyday life and general immmigration to Wisconsin and scores of other topics that would make us more well versed on our topic.
I am not trying to contradict you just advising you and all Rangernetters to use discernment on what you see on TV.
