In watching The Crossing it got me to thinking about leadership.
Several times in the moive Washington and some of his staff made
the comment his army were not soliders. Washington made the
comment " If I lead them striaght into hell, they will be with me."
At the time of the crossing Washington only had 2,000 men against
the British 20,000 men. What made these men stay with Washington
even thought the odds were against them? It comes down to two things
love and turst.
Even though Washingtons men were not soliders they put there trust in
him. I think they knew he would not expect them to do something that
he himself could not do. In the moive Washington wanted to recross the
river
after the battle. Please keep in mind the men had been up two hours before
dusk, they rowed acrossed the river, attacked and was expected to
row back acrossed the river. Alot of the men were tried, but did they
quit?
No, they went on to win the Revoultionary war.
How can we apply this?
1. As leaders the boys should be able to put there trust in us.
This means if a boy tells you something don't go telling 500 other
people about it.
2. Be firm but loveing.
Washington was short temperted, but there usually was a reason
behind his action.
3. Do you expect more from your boys then you know they can do?
Even though Washingtons men were tired they were expected to
recross the river.
We can go on and on about what makes a good leader. But unless
we start with a foundation of love and trust, it would be usless to try
and build upon it.
