Duane wanted me to share an experience I had last evening. I take training when the opportunity presents itself whether it be in Rangers or Scouts and when asked to serve on a Eagle Board of Review I gladly accepted.

To my surprise I discovered that not only would we be interviewing the Eagle candidate but also his parents and his Scout Master. The purpose of the interview was two-fold. One, to confirm that the boy had met the requirements for Eagle and second, to establish his maturity and moral character.

Each of the Board members went round-robin and asked pointed questions. Since this was my first Eagle Board of Review, I was given a booklet of approved questions to ask. So I proceeded with the following:

Do you believe in God? (this is actually an Eagle requirement).
Tell us what your religious affiliation is. Tell us the types of things/ministries you are currently involved with in your church? Why do you think faith in God is important?

Other questions involved the boy's involvement with school and the community. Questions regarding global and current events came next to see how aware he was with issues about his country and town. We asked what he thought about the moral character of politicians should be. After(what I felt) was a very thorough interview ranging from Scouting to future goals, the boy was excused and his parents entered. The questions for the parents dealt primarily with the moral character of their son and how mature and self-motivated he was. It was as though we were going to hire this boy for an important high paying job and wanted glean everything about him. One of the questions asked: 'When your son moves out one day, and is alone, how will he fair without guidance". His mother responded; "Our son is never alone. God is with him and the support from his Father and I will always be there -- even if he were on the other side of the world.

Our interview concluded with the Scout Master. The final question was: "Is this boy a good candidate for Eagle". The response: He has been an Eagle in thought, word and deed for the last year.

After 2 1/2 hours, the meeting ended. I thought it ironic that it was held in the County Court House - Juvenile Deliquent wing. - I guess a fore-shawdowing of what COULD be.  - It was a good experience and I would hope I could emphasize enough to my Buckaroos the imporance of moral character in everything they do.I wonder If I'd do so well in such an interview.........
