"We have been seeing attendance build in recent years," Manske says, "but this year saw us go over the 300 mark for the first time in many years." Dedicated to seeing God move on the hearts of men in the district, Manske says his goals for the district Advance included having every ministry to, through or by men represented at Spencer Lake Christian Center, the district's campgrounds. "We had ministries there that have never been connected to this Advance in the past," he says. "Our most popular breakouts were the ministries that challenged men as husband's and fathers. The district's Marriage Encounter ministry saw more than 60 men in attendance during its single presentation." The entire crowd was too large for the dining facilities. Conference planners managed 23 workshops scheduled in 8 locations, in a 2-hour time slot during the lunch period. "We just kept moving people through the dining hall, and through the breakouts," Manske says. National HonorBound Director Chuck Brewster was the keynote speaker. According to Manske, reports are still coming in as to how the Holy Spirit moved at the Advance. "Men were truly touched, both by Brother Brewster, and by the other speakers that were at this year's Advance." More than 80 men attended a special, 3-hour seminar on "How To Be A Godly Husband" taught by Evangelist David Johnson. "We were also pleased with the numbers that came for Brother Johnson's seminar," Manske states. "So many men are hungry to see God move in their families." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ** CHURCH LAYMAN MAKES BIBLE RECORDINGS AVAILABLE ONLINE David Williams, a member of Bethel Temple Assembly of God in Hampton, Va., (the Rev. Ron Johnson, pastor) was searching for an audio narration of the Bible that he could download from the Internet. When he discovered that there was not one available, he recorded the New Testament and Psalms on his home computer and released the recordings on the Internet as a free download. "In the first month," Williams says, "the site, <http://www.audiotreasure.com>, received more than 16,000 hits from 53 different countries and several thousand copies of books of the Bible in the popular mp3 audio format were downloaded." Williams was particularly excited to see downloads from nations where public gospel witness is not allowed. "Pastor Johnson and our church's leadership had been praying for God to give our members new and creative ways to share the gospel," Williams says. He believes his Internet Bible recordings are one answer to those prayers. "During the months I spent recording the Scriptures, I sometimes wondered if there would be any interest. It was very gratifying to see hundreds of visitors every day from around the world downloading audio portions the Bible. Now my site is having trouble keeping up with the demand." Williams used the World English Bible for his project. The World English Bible (WEB) is a public domain (no copyright) Modern English translation of the Holy Bible, based on the American Standard Version of the Holy Bible first published in 1901, the Biblia Hebraica Stutgartensa Old Testament, and the Greek Majority Text New Testament. The WEB is in draft form, and currently being edited for accuracy and readability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ** ASSEMBLIES OF GOD WORKS WITH EVANGELICAL COALITION TO HELP REFUGEES According to Religion Today, Albania's evangelicals are being honored for their heroic work on behalf of Kosovar refugees. The country's 160 evangelical churches will receive the 2000 World Relief Helping Hands Award for their help for those who fled the violence in Kosovo last spring. An estimated 80 percent of the 480,000 refugees benefited from the physical and spiritual care. Eugene Begu, general secretary of the Albania Evangelical Alliance, will receive the award in Arlington, Va., March 7 during the annual meeting of the National Association of Evangelicals. "For a national church to go from having just five known evangelicals to transforming the lives of Kosovar refugees within 10 years is an amazing story," says Clive Calver, president of World Relief, in the Religion Today report. "This is the church at its best," he says, noting "the willingness of the churches to be salt and light, self-sacrificially serving their Lord." Churches responded wholeheartedly despite their poverty. In Kukes in northern Albania, a small church helped refugee mothers with newborns, providing food and a place to bathe their children. In Tirana, churches ran a transit center, processing 5,000 refugees a day, and sent volunteer teams to prepare food for a tent city of 2,200. A church in Erseke cared for 760 refugees, and in churches in Durres oversaw a camp of 200 people. When the refugees returned to Kosovo, the churches followed and continued to help. They are rebuilding homes for widows, providing trauma counseling for women, and making loans to help widows start businesses, the ministry reports. The long-term goal is to plant churches in the region. "Our Assemblies of God missionaries were involved in the transit center in Tirane and helped several times a week," says the Rev. Greg Mundis, regional director for Europe. "In addition, our Tirane fellowship served 250,000 meals. Our missionaries also supervised a refugee work outside of Tirane in Fushe Kruja and touched thousands of people. We serve in the Evangelical Alliance with the other groups." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ** A/G COLLEGES ...NCU acquires land adjacent to campus After more than 10 years of negotiations, North Central University (Minneapolis, Minn.) acquired 34,577 square feet of property adjacent to the school's campus. Originally priced at $1.2 million, North Central purchased the land for $500,000. Dr. Gordon Anderson, president, said, "Because we're in a [growth] restrictive city environment, we felt the property was an important part of North Central's future." Coupled with the university's recent purchase of the building that formerly housed a drugstore and liquor store, North Central will own a complete panel of land west of Chicago Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets. According to university officials, plans for the new property have not been determined. However, in light of nearly $200 million in building projects under construction in and around neighboring Elliot Park community, the university's property value is expected to increase. North Central University is one of 18 endorsed A/G postsecondary schools. ---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Third Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress and 2000 Celebration August 7 and 8--3rd Triennial World A/G Congress August 8-10--2000 Celebration Indianapolis, Indiana (http://2000.agcongress.org) "EXPERIENCE A FRESH PENTECOST FOR THE 21st CENTURY" ---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- AG-NEWS: The A/G News & Information Service, (c) 2000 A service of the Assemblies of God's Office of Public Relations.
