In my experience getting the boys motivated to earn their advancements is
the most challenging part of the RR program. Commanders often have to be
resourceful in finding ways to encourage boys to advance. Unfortunately
there are no quick fixes for this problem. No single solution will get
100% participation so advancement must be approached from several directions.
These are the methods I can think of. If you have another idea please post.
1. Councils of Acheivement - often these are too far and between to be
effective motivators in a fledgeling program. Established programs will
use this very effectively.
2. Point system - assigning a point value to acheivement is problematic
but it provides an immediate award for work done.
3. Access to events - Allowing only "Top Hands" or "Bowie Knife" holders
to go on a campout, bowling trip, outing, etc.
4. Home Visits - making appointments with families to go over advancements
with their son. This is time consuming *but* it is an effective way to
gain parental support which is a precursor to enlistment.
5. Outpost Councilman of Advancement - Having the outpost councilman in
charge of advancement present at the meetings will encourage the boys to
advance, especially if the boys have a close relationship with him/her.
6. Patrol System - When RR is developing boy-leaders like it should the
Patrol Guides will be able to help the less experienced boys with their
advancements.
7. Targeted Meeting Features - Teachers may choose to pick one or two
advancement points to teach during a regular meeting then have each boy
present pass that requirement.
