Home Made Fire Starter Igniter
Materials:
2. Corrugated Card Board strips 1 1/2" wide by 1/2 "long
2 Pair of 24 gauge Telephone wire Blue and Blue/White and Orange and
White/Orange.
20 foot long piece of 2 pair 24 gauge Telephone wire
4 cotton Balls.
20 shavings off of a Magnesium metal match.
1 can of spray adhesive.
1 12 volt car battery.
1 pushbutton safety switch toggle with a button.
2 small pieces of extra fine steel wool cut off the end of a fresh roll
with scissors 1/4 wide.
5 minutes of your time.
Steps to make the igniter.
1. Cut off a short 8" long piece of Telephone wire and remove the 4
inner wires.
2. Strip 1 1/2" off of both ends of the 4 wires and lay aside.
3. Cut one 1 1/2" wide by 1/2 long piece of corrugated cardboard.
4. Thread two of the wires through the inside tunnels of the cardboard
separating them by 1/2 inch.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make another base igniter then go onto step 6.
6. Now cut off of one end of a new roll of steel wool about 1/2 inch wide
and spread it out where it is loose and fuzzy.
7. Take this piece of fuzzy steel woo and place it along the edge of the
1/2"cardboard where the bare wires are sticking out of. twist one side of
the wire around one 1/3 of the fuzzy steel wool and then do the same on
the other side with the other wire making sure the two wires don't touch
each other and leaving the middle third loose and fuzzy.
8. Take the metal match and scrape off about 20 shavings into a glass
bowl.
9. Tear up 4 cotton balls tell they are very loose and fuzzy.
10. Spray the igniter steel wool and card board with a light spray of
spay adhesive.
10. Place the igniter over the bowl and sprinkle on the shavings from the
metal match onto the steel wool part.
11.Take the torn up cotton ball and wrap it loosely around the igniter.
12 Repeat steps 6 through 11 until you have 2 igniters and then goto step
13.
13. Congratulations you now have 2 igniters. However remember this rule
two is one and one in none. Means if the first one goes off that is
great you have one nice council fire. If the first one doesn't go off
you have a second chance at a nice fire..
Now for the test!!!! (you fire bug you)
Go outside to a safe fire prevention place that has fire prevention
items handy and lay out the 20 foot of wire and twist the 4 matching
colored wires to the two matching colored wires of the igniters. For
example one igniter is Blue and white/Blue and the other is Orange and
White/orange connect the matching colors to each other make sure you have
no shorts between the wires. Then anchor the igniter so it won't blow
away (put a rock on the wire about 12" from the two igniters. Now hookup
one side of the 20foot wire to the car battery and leave the other side
to the switch. (Use a thumb screws so it can be a quick connect.) Then
making sure the switch is deactivated wire the other side from the switch
to the battery. Make sure your clear and yell fire in the hole and push
the button.
I made three of these tonight and all three burnt the cotton ball
completely up.
Hope this helps. I wanted a safer way that is reliable to light our
Council fires. This is a better way then black powder and rocket
igniters. Thank you my FCF Brothers for your words of council.
