One of the things our adult training course did to
assist us in learning to tie knots is that they asked the Sr.Patrol Guide of
each patrol to pick 2 members from their patrol.
The two that were picked were told to tie a 100
foot rope around their waist using the bowline knot. One person at each end was
securely fastened to this rope. Next they told us to stand opposite side of a
tree. The Sr. Patrol guide was told to have his team members tie a clove
hitch knot around the tree using their bodies. The two patrol members were
forbidden to talk. Only the Sr. Patrol guide was allowed to give orders to the
two people by saying, " Jennifer walk around the tree once. Kevin walk over the
rope and around once.... etc. If the Sr. Patrol Guide did not know the
knot he/she could call on one other patrol member to take over as SPL.
It was pretty fun and hilarious to see us wind
around and around the tree trunk and then undo ourselves because we had tied the
wrong knot. The trick was to not only to tie the knot but see how well the
patrol worked as a team. (We were also not allowed to use our
hands).

It took our patrol about 15
minutes.
