NATIONAL ROYAL RANGERS COUNCIL PREPARES FOR 21ST CENTURY

The 2000 National Royal Rangers Council convened March 16-18 in
Springfield, Mo., for the first time under the new leadership of
National Commander Richard Mariott. "The Council will be remembered
as an historic event in Royal Rangers history," said Mariott. This
year's council marked a number of important and outstanding events.

Prior to the opening ceremony and Silver Eagle Banquet, the
national executive committee gathered on March 13 and 14 to discuss
the future of Royal Rangers and an expanded approach to ministry to
and for boys. Curriculum resource members met on March 15 to
discuss and assign curriculum writing for the enhanced program.
Survey responses from district and outpost leaders have shown an
overwhelmingly positive response for the expansion and enhancement
of the Royal Rangers programs.

"Although the revisions are just in working stages right now," said
Mariott, "excitement was at an all-time high as Royal Rangers
leaders across the nation prepare to reach, teach, and keep boys
for Christ."

While Royal Rangers will continue primarily as a camping and
advancement ministry program for boys, the curriculum revision will
include non-camping activities, awards, and advancements. The
leadership survey respondents and the national Royal Rangers
Executive Committee both demonstrated continued support for Royal
Rangers remaining a ministry specific to boys.

The council began with the Silver Eagle Banquet, March 16, attended
by 425 Royal Rangers supporters, of which 329 were registered
councilmen. The banquet recognized district commanders for
outstanding service in ministry to boys during 1999, with 37
district commanders receiving their Silver Eagle Awards.

Charles Hackett, executive director for the Assemblies of God
Division of Home Missions, provided the keynote address during the
banquet. Drawing upon a number of topics, Hackett created an
inspiring message that challenged the councilmen to be godly role
models as they work with boys.

Council business sessions convened on March 17 and included the
introduction of the national Royal Rangers staff. Two new positions
were added to the national office staff, along with two replacement
staff members. Those introduced included Richard Mariott, national
commander; Brian Hendrickson, Buckaroos/Straight Arrows coordinator
(a new position); Mike Laliberty, Pioneers/Trailblazers coordinator
(a new position); Rick Dostal, national training coordinator; and
Marshall Bruner administrative and ministries coordinator.

During the council business session, much time was devoted to
discussing the development of Royal Rangers for the 21st century.
With the addition of non-camping advancements and achievements to
the program, Royal Rangers leaders expect the program to continue
to grow and reach multitudes of boys for Christ every year.

Council business reports included comments from foreign and home
missionaries involved in the Rangers ministry. Mark Broberg, a
candidate missionary preparing for ministry in Russia, shared his
vision to spread the Royal Rangers ministry throughout Russia.
Spontaneously, councilmen pledged $15,551 toward this new work. Of
this amount, David Boyd, national Children's Ministry Agency/BGMC
coordinator, pledged $5,000 on behalf of BGMC. BGMC funds will
underwrite translation of Royal Rangers materials into Russian.

The council closed on March 18. Additional time was slotted for the
councilmen to plan for the revisions of the boys programs. During
the afternoon, a reception was held recognizing Paul Stanek for 25
years of service as the national training coordinator and deputy
national commander. Stanek received plaques from the General
Council of the Assemblies of God and from the National Royal
Rangers Council.

The Junior Councilmen Banquet, sponsored by Light for the Lost,
closed the council Saturday evening. Don Jacques, a Springfield,
Mo., businessman and executive member of the national LFTL Council,
challenged the councilmen to continue and extend their support of
the Junior Councilmen program, a ministry for Royal Rangers
involvement in LFTL. During the banquet $268,251 was pledged toward
the continued development and printing of two Junior Councilmen
evangelism literature projects.
