These are serious trips.. and they happened to have two "sports medicine" professionals with the group. There is a way to do everything and blister prevention and practical knoledge was impressive. They have a #3 hike that is an overnight backpack trip on the Pacific Crest Trail.. at peak skeeter mating season<G> *yur the meat<G> This leads to the 6 day 50+ mile hike.. and later a trip to Cimmeron New Mexico and Philmont Scout Ranch where they will tackle 120 miles in a week! I was a little woozy from the REI gear the troop sports.. sort of "High Buck-Low drag" but they put it to use and it's not a foo-foo deal to have socks that work, boots that grip and outerwear that sheds water and breathes... *If you stay dry all you have to do is tolerate the pain of lifting your flesh to meet your *spirit..and walk on.. Siouxon Creek is an "Old Growth" un-cut forest of Cedar and Fir... the water is high and in the Northwest "creek" translates into "Roaring River" in Mizzourah speak.. It's a sight.. but also a serious hazard if you should slip off the cliff side into the water.. The class 6 Water shoot I stood next too, sounded mean and low... like the engines on a 747 as it shot 3,000 CFS water through a slot.. That's a impossible water obstacle, as the hydraulics created could snap a Kayak or raft.. push you down and hold you for a *very long time. People die every year.. But Scouts in the Northwest teach the boys to hike with care.. and it seemes to me that if you do it frequently you begin to adjust to carry only what you will use, and make it an enjoyable experiance. They used Boy leadership and reflected on what could have been better at the end. I'm glad I went<G> -=A=- -- ࡱ
