Most of the silly gestures people do and say are based on warding off evil.
Many of these gestures created from the days of the early church still
remain with us today, such as people crossing their fingers as a gesture of
wishful thinking or wishing for good luck.

Early European Christians around the 17th century believed that if they took
their index finger and crossed it with another believer, making a symbol of
the cross, would be insuring that thing to happen, based on the scripture
whatever two or more agreed upon on earth would be sanctioned in heaven.
Later this simulation of a cross with their fingers would be done by oneself
.

So now when you see someone cross their index and ring fingers and say
"cross your fingers for good luck", you can let them know that they are
making the sign of the cross and that "pray" is even more effective!
