Ja, we prefer to tie down our ponchos with rubber expanders imstead of using
rope.
This makes it extremely easy and fast to hook that thing up.
Just look for some brush or tree, hook the ends in and you are all set.
We first tried this out on our 450km bike trip through Alsace-Lorraine with
our Warthogs.
Just put the hooks through the grommet holes and look for something to hook
the other expander in.
It also works if you take the hook and push it into the roots of a piece of
grass.
This will change your life style for good.

I don't kow if you still know those army ponchos. We are using them in
german rangers. Each of the participants brought his own as you can get
them
at a low price at army shops. They are an ideal ranger material as you
can
use them for almost everything. You can use them against rain or you can
build a hand-barrow with on or two of them. You can also use them as a
mat
under your sleeping bag to isolate you and to keep the sleeping bag dry.
And
last but not least you can build a bivac with them.
If you are alone you would probably lash it to four trees falling down
to
the side the wind is blowing from so that it would form a primitive
shelter
against wind and rain.
Two people would build what we call a 'Toblerone' (Do you know Toblerone
chocolate from Switzerland? They have the same form). They would button
their two ponchos one to the other. Then you would lash them to two
trees so
that one forms the 'roof' and the other one the 'floor' of a tent which
is
open on two sides.
