Well of course the tin pan was a common item in the mess equipment of many a
frontier expedition. I am quite sure the tin pan saved many a pilgrim from
burns on the palms of his hands from holding hot food. <g> I don't have any
problem connecting a name like Tin Pan with the frontier.
