Royal Rangers pitch their tents

Tent after tent went up on the banks of Lake Evans Thursday as a steady stream of campers arrived for the Southern California Royal Rangers Camporee in the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area.

More than 2,000 boys from Fresno to San Diego are expected to participate in the three-day campout for Christian boys 9 to 15 years of age.

The Royal Rangers organization is similar to the Boy Scouts in that members learn crafts and outdoor skills and take camping trips.

But there is a spiritual aspect of the boys' training that sets the Royal Rangers apart from the secular scouts, said Cliff Olson, the children's pastor of First Assembly of God in Bakersfield.

"We're trying to train the boys to be solid men when they grow up," he said.

The organization is sponsored primarily by the Assemblies of God.

The Camporee is held every three years and attracts most Royal Rangers from Southern California.

By Thursday afternoon, several hundred boys already were scrambling up a rock-climbing wall, heading to the lake, or just sitting around the camp.

Bakersfield boys Jamie Black, 11, and Ryan Fuentes, 10, helped set up camp for the Valley Bible Fellowship group early in the day. After a hot dog lunch, they planned to do some fishing.

The boys had the weekend planned out: a model-rocket launching, swimming, a cardboard boat race and a BB gun shooting tournament.

Each evening, after a busy day of activities and competitions, the boys are to congregate for group worship services. Thursday's service was to be followed by fireworks, and pageants are scheduled for both tonight and Saturday night.

"We're trying to help develop the total boy: physically, spiritually and mentally," said David Vincent, the Royal Ranger district commander organizing the Camporee.

"We have a lot of boys who may not have a father in their life," he said. The Camporee is a chance for those boys to interact with men who can be role models.

The Camporee is a first overnight camping trip for some of the boys. Ptron Hamilton, 9, of Lancaster, said he's never been camping overnight before. Just being able to camp in a tent overnight is more than enough fun for him.
