Technically, the name "Royal Rangers" is not copyrighted but trademarked by the
Assemblies of God, and that trademark protection is good for as long as we keep using
it. You can't copyright a name. Trademark protection is better, anyway, because it
lasts longer. It is more narrow, however, in that a trademark is only protected for
use with the same kind of product or service. For example, the Quatro computer
spreadsheet doesn't infringe on the trademark of the Audi Quatro automobile. A use of
"Royal Rangers" infringes on the Assemblies of God boys program use if a reasonable
person might be confused into thinking that the other use (a music band) was connected
with the same program. A "cease and desist" letter from a lawyer might convince the
music group to change its name if done soon enough.
