*My "word" this week is "Duty"
"Duty is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things..
You cannot do more...you should never wish to do less" *Gen.Robert E Lee
Confederate soldiers fought bravely to the very end, dispite sickness,
hunger, poverty and the loss of dear friends... they were led by the very
best of Generals.. Lee,Jackson and Forest... Stuart, Longstreeet, Johnson
and Beauregard...
*I'm not here to re-fight the American Civil War... but to point out
the character of the men who would follow such leaders in a "nobel cause"
Duty...
*Scouts have three points to their emblem.. and raise three fingers
to give the scout salute as an oath or promise...
Duty to GOD
Duty to Country
Duty to self
They start their "Oath/Pledge" with this:
*On my honor...I will do my best, to do my DUTY to GOD and my COUNTRY...
*My dictonary speeks about DUTY...
*Duty: conduct due parents and leaders-RESPECT
: Obliatory tasks, conduct, service or function as a result of ones
position. (*patrol guide has a "duty?")
:the force of MORAL OBLIGATION!
You see... my boys have no sence of DUTY!
-----------------------------------------
*They understand play, and they understand winning and are willing to
lose their HONOR to gain a measure of victory over a fellow Ranger..
Boys with out a sence of DUTY will cross every point of the Ranger Code
without a hesitation... *A ranger does not Lie,Cheat or Steal..
*That's the CODE!
Yet how quick does a boy present an excuse, a Lie or a Fit of temper to
hide a MORAL FAILURE?
"Duty...is the sublinest word in our language...
DO YOUR DUTY IN ALL THINGS! you cannot do more... and should never wish to
do less..."

Subj: [RR] *Success?

We commanders want to award success to successful Royal Rangers...
but to do that and encrease the participation in success...
1. We must clearly articulate the criteria for success and provide clear,
immediate and constructive feedback.
2. We must show the Rangers that the skills are within their grasp by
clearly and systematicly modeling these skills.
3. We must help them see *success as a valuable aspect of their
personalities.
How do we make successful rangers?
*Use all the skills from Section 5 of the LTC to build trust and
*communication between you and the boys, for instruction in skills.
Get in there and struggle with them to understand!
*Unfold knoledge from their perspective... tell them what the thing is
and how it works and when to use it. *Some use the "ask a question and
re-fit the answer tactic..." that's good..
But in any case state what the criteria for success might be...
*some Rangers absorb quietly.. some rush to answer....
But what *you as Leader/Teacher should do is build questions around the
desire to AROUSE CURIOSITY!
*When we see the rangers become curious, suddenly the lecture is over and
the game turns to answering questions! *This is the process to deep
understanding, when we ask curious questions!
Get in there and ask the question... and wait for an answer!
..ask a deeper question.. and another!<G>
How can we maintain a *curious intrest in cut and dry topics?
*Suggestion.. (Make the explination "fragmentary" or contradictory
displaying differing thoughts of the same subject)
The rush to get to the right answer... runs over the top of "what if"
questions and those even in dry topics sometimes become keys to teachable
moments of truth!
*Review:
*Ask a "probeing question.." answer it with a redicules answer<G>
..ask a follow-up to a boys answer... *What if? <G>
