Which is where http://www.snopes.com comes in handy.

Simply hit the database search function, type in a few indicative words,
and they will show you any of the reports related or pertaining to the
issue. They have people who search through these things, calling people /
entities / etc. reported in these "stories" to get to the truth.

BTW, the 809 area code scam is something they have also researched. They
have found it to be true, but the amount that is being reported as being
charged to a phone bill $2425.00, they report as being somewhat over
exaggerated.
