Last night I conducted a "Scoutmaster conference" with
two boys going for rank advancement to 2nd class Scout.
After receveing all the 'sign off's in their handbook
they meet quietly with a adult leader to review the handbook
and prepare them to meet a "board of review" before recieveing
the official rank advancement.
*Abrey is 12 with blond hair and a crushed ballcap<G>
I told him what we were going to do in reviewing his handbook
and He began a run down of events and situations that he had
triumphed over to recieve each signature<G> You see not one
sig. was identical! He's delt with 16 different persons at
16 different events since summer to get where he was last night!
I was the 17th<G> and he was headed to stand before 3 or 4
parents on the board!
He was not passive, he was involved and driveing my questions<G>
He was PROUD! and I found him interested, charming and very
concerned with advancement.. his eyes were alive!
The next boy needed me to ask him about "how have you demonstrated
scout spirit in your life?"
He told me about an incident where he could have cheated at
school, then opened the back of his handbook and gave me a note!
"Thomas is in my school class and has shown me the value of
scouting in his life by refuseing to take the easy way to
cheat at a test. I find him to hold remarkible integrity."
*signed- *dated yesterday by his teacher with phone number!
....So!
There was NO QUESTION in *my mind, I signed off!
"High morale is the index of effective leadership"
Dealing with boys who "KNOW THIER STUFF" just raises
my *spirit!
"Morale is based on the belief of the Leader in the follower,
of the follower in the leader, of each in themselves and both
...in the cause!
