WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 7 A teen-ager with a gun was shot outside the
White House fence Wednesday after he
refused to surrender to Secret Service officers, a law enforcement officer
said. President Bush was reported safe inside the residence.
THE INCIDENT occurred around 11:30 a.m. EST, and the man with the gun was
taken to a hospital after being wounded, the official said.
Secret Service agents and District of Columbia police ringed the White
House in a sudden security clampdown when the shots were fired,
and closed surrounding streets.
According to Dan Halpert, a witness, he heard three "pops" and then saw
police running.
The suspect was taken to George Washington University hospital for
treatment.

available.
