A couple:

cut 10" pieces of 1x10 pine
sand or cut corners to be rounded
sand
stain
varnish
tack on 1/4 manila rope on the front as a border with a square knot at the
bottom
paste on a picture of buckaroo in buckaroo uniform in the middle of the front
have boy write note to mom on back with felt marker.

as an alternative, you could copy the picture onto paper using a copier, burn
some of the edges, paste it down and cover it with swatches of light brown
paint
to give it a weathered look.

cowboy trivets - same start as above, but don't varnish
add feet by cutting pieces of dowel and gluing or tacking thru the diameter
of the
dowel to the board (That way they will all be the same height) Have the
boys add
the outpost # and ranch brands to the front using markers. Use a wood
burner or
a torch to burn them in.
