Also if you are using Internet explorer, right click the big blue "E" on your desktop, a menu pops up, go to "properties" a screen that says "Internet Properties" appears.  On the XP version click delete cookies and delete files then clear the history. that should eliminate some of the gunk in there.

Zone Labs ZoneAlarm works, when properly set, to block those. There are other ways, too. I think the Google toolbar can block those.
