Windows XP and Windows 2000 are both very stable. More stable, in fact, than Win ’98. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible to write third-party software that mucks them up. I’ve been running XP at home for over a year. Sometimes an application that’s running locks up, but windows doesn’t. I can shut down the locked-up program without affecting XP. I like it.
Jim Hufford, I suspect your company has some network software at work that was poorly written or has some settings improperly set that makes XP lock up. Maybe your company is running software that’s written for Win 2000 but you’re using it on XP. Maybe the company is running a “cocktail” of programs that won’t run with each other, regardless of which version of windows is running.
You might try finding out what applications are set up to run automatically after hours. Maybe automatic back-ups, maybe anti-virus updates, maybe something else. If there’s more than one automatic after-hours program, try letting your computer run all night with only one of them running. If it goes with no problems, let it run the next night with a different application running. The faulty software might reside on the network server or it might be installed in each PC.
If you had a Win ’98 machine at work, would it run all night with no problems on the company’s network?
Your company should switch to Windows 2000. It won’t run some computer game software as well as XP (like you need that at work), but it is much more controllable by your I.T. department and is better for networks. They would be able to decide who can install what software and who can’t and would have a much better handle on viruses.
