The latest cycle of intrests for "Trooper Outpost #1" is the re-cycleing
of a derilict '65 VW panel transporter. GMA #3911 looked around
the yard and came to the conclusion that the outpost was fairly well
"tooled up" and READY! for a challenge.
As we previously posted.. the VW Bus was found out on a ranch in
eastern Oregon on the road to "Hell's Canyon" (USA's deepest gorge)
and one of the most remote areas in America.
*This weekend.. The Oupost climed in on boat cushion seats, turned
the vintage key and fired up the 1600 duel port engine!
After checking for oil leaks and wireing up temp. brake lights
and hanging a valid licence plate off the back with bailing wire..
GMA#3911 found reverse and backed it up the driveway of "Rancho Deluxe"
and onto the gravel road. The old bus shuddered and squeeled as it
came back to life. First gear was fine.. but the shift into second
sent the 39 year old reduction boxes into a dance mode<G>
The Outpost laughed with glee as we were lifted and shaken like
a cement mixer! VOOOM-der zoom der woop-tedoo!
*At the stop sign...
We acualy came to a STOP! (What a wonderment!)
We turned the corner for a first run around Kunze Farm on the backstreets
and loose tools and parts danced and flew around the inside of the empty
van. At 35 mph a loud BOOM-boom-BOOM! was heard.. later to discover
it was the steel pipe of the old seat knocking on the tin wall!
*NO PROBLEM! Zer gut!
Kommandant A#1 as co-pilot held the vintage hand-hold and braced
off the open wind-wing of the splitty's slideing passenger window.
(a bit of the time/space vortex opened a memory blip)
Driver/Pilot Josh had to yell:
"Wow-What a ride!..Is it supposed to sound like this?"
The Co-pilot/Mechanic/Kommander mouthed a feeble:
"Mayby.. but it will get better.. *I hope, we still have a engine right?"
The mighty 46 HP air-cooled 4 cyl was pumping out the RPM's and
exhausting thru the extractor..
