*Look at it in this local perspective-
1980 and back... a twisted 2 lane road leads past large
commercial forest land and lumber mills to a small lake
surrounded by gut busting beauty... in the shadow of a tall
round Mountian. There is a lodge from the old west, made of logs
and managed by a "old codger" (old grumpy-grizzly man)
A vintage Scout camp.. sends a ww2 Liberty boat accross the lake
when hailed from a hand crank telephone attached to a large tree.
Camp sights and trails head into the back country.. *paradise!
A single road leads up to timberline and then a trail up
rock and pumice on a near perfect clone of Japans Mt. Fuji..
May 1980 ...all that is gone at 8:35 am in a natural disaster.
1980- on...
A 4 lane super highway zooms up the valley past tourist sights,
360 degree theaters, fast food chains and several "Natural In-
terpretive centers" with monster gift shops, and coin operated
telescopes. Steel tube rails hold you back from the empty landscape..
To re-enact the 1980 devistation.. fibreglass replicas of the trees
now are placed by artists to simulate your minds desire for adventure.
Helecoper rides and small planes must agree to circle the mountian
clockwise to avoid mid-air collisions.. Parking lots the size of
Walmarts now inhabit country where Deer and Elk once grazed..
Johnston ridge "observitory" at 5 miles from the Volcano houses
a large theater and interactive displays as well as soft ice cream
and $5 cheeseburgers.
May 1980 an Eruption with the force of several atomic bombs distroyed
paradise, a fine trout lake and many fond camping memories.
Last friday-
*A tiny steam cloud vented on the south side of the lava dome.
